While on vacation in Tanzania in 1999, bricklayer Tim Randall constructed the two-room Ololosokwan Clinic. Before then, residents of the Ololosokwan hamlet had to travel up to 60 kilometers to Wasso Hospital in order to receive medical care. It was difficult to travel to Wasso Hospital during wet seasons because the roads were nearly impassable. It was gradually improved over time in response to the obvious need for a much larger facility and more equipment to handle the rising demand for medical care in the area. β
Africa Foundation and Beyond have been able to obtain substantial donor funding for the clinic over the previous 15 years, which has made it possible to build a ten-room facility, provide medical supplies, furniture, and equipment, as well as a basic solar power system.
Ololosokwan ward is located in Loliondo division’s Arusha area inside the Ngorongoro district. It includes a number of communities that border the Kenyan border to the north and the eastern edge of the Serengeti National Park, such as Ololosokwan, Sero, and Meirowa.β The majority of the population consists of Maasai agro-pastoralists, with a tiny immigrant agriculturalist population, the Wambulu, hailing from other northern Tanzanian areas. Ololosokwan village is home to about 6,000 people in total. βThe Maasai people take great pride in their culture and are content to preserve and uphold it. Unlike many other tribes that live close to protected areas, they are widely known for their ability to peacefully coexist with animals because they do not consume game meat. β
The Ololosokwan, Meirowa, and Sero communities partnered with Africa Foundation and Beyond with a legacy focus on Ololosokwan Clinic and Primary School, Meirowa Primary School, and Sero Clinic, for more than 15 years, providing assistance for their sustainable growth. With the kind assistance of many donors, the following projects have been finished: The Ololosokwan Clinic is building a ten-room clinic as well as housing for doctors and nurses. The Ololosokwan Primary School is building a kitchen, dining hall, and two double classrooms. The building of two-in-one teacher housing, two ablution complexes, a kitchen and/or dining hall, five classrooms, and an administration block at Meirowa Primary School and the building of a 2-in-1 nursing suite at Sero Clinic.
