Many community members residing in our Maputaland primary communities earn less than minimum wage, which means they’re officially living below the South African food poverty line.
Recognizing this reality, Africa Foundation and &Beyond are focused on supporting the establishment of food gardens across all the Early Childhood Development, Home Based Care and Disability centers currently being supported in the region. In time this will be extended to the Primary and Secondary Schools supported through the Echo-Environmental Education Programme.
KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) is the third smallest, and second most populated province in South Africa. Children and youth make up 67% of its population. The Province is engaged in an array of economic activities, most notably agriculture, tourism, manufacturing and trade.
Despite its positive economic attributes, KZN suffers great disparity and poverty. Africa Foundation in collaboration with &Beyond has been working in the uMkhanyakude District of KZN since 1992. Within this District Africa Foundation supports 5 rural communities; Mduku , Mnqobokasi and Nibela in Big 5 Hlabisa municipality and KwaNgwenya and KwaJobe situated in Jozini . The municipality is located along the coast in the far north of the KwaZulu Natal Province and is home to the Isimangaliso Wetland Park.
