Africa Foundation and &Beyond are working with the local community leadership, Mpumalanga Government and other NGO’s to progressively establish boreholes, water storage tanks and water access points.
Even though efforts are being made to ensure communities have access to water, the average family is within a kilometer to the nearest water point. The responsibilities to fetching water usually falls on women and children, they often carrying heavy buckets on the head, or use wheelbarrows to fetch water required for the household.
Recognizing the challenges involved in transporting water from communal water source, Africa Foundation and &Beyond are also supporting the provision of Hippo Water Rollers. The project budget below refers to funding required per Hippo Water Roller.
Mpumalanga – meaning ‘place where the sun rises’, is one of nine Provinces in South Africa, and home to just over 4 million people. The province is blessed with incredible natural beauty and is home to the southern section of the Kruger National Park.
However, it is also characterized by very high levels of unemployment, with an unemployment rate of 56.6% compared to the national average of 32.9% in 2022. The average annual household income is approximately R29 400 / $ 1 730.
Many people rely on government grants while others find work in nearby farms or tourism lodges. Service delivery in the area is sparse, access to water is extremely limited and waste management services are poor. Road infrastructure, although improving, is poor and public transport options are limited.
