Africa Foundations footprint is currently anchored by the seascape associated with andBeyond Mnemba Island. The coral reefs and seascapes surrounding the communities with which Africa Foundation works are extremely important for marine conservation and Biodiversity. In 2018 Oceans Without Borders was established on Mnemba Island. Our community work is currently focused on 6 communities directly associated with Mnemba Atoll, Matemwe, Kigomani, Kijini, Mbuyutende, Jugakuu and Nungwe. These poor rural communities with limited social infrastructure, poor education outcomes, high unemployment and limited economic activity.
Our partnership leverages the strengths of the two organisations, with the local &Beyond team directly supporting the work of our local project team and our community partners. We believe that conservation is best achieved by ensuring that the benefits of conservation are shared by the communities that are the stewards of Africa’s conservation landscapes and seascapes. Our work has a focus on conserving ecosystems, future foundations and future leaders.
We are working to restore the ecological integrity of the local Mnemba Island reefs and ultimately support the sustainability of local reef fisheries
